DEFINITE AND INDEFINITE
——LIU XUGUANG’S ABSTRACT INK PAINTING EXHIBITION

Liu Xuguang's abstract ink painting exhibition DEFINITE AND INDEFINITE will be showcased in White Box Museum of Art of 798 Art District, from 31st December, 2010 to 15th January, 2011. An opening reception is scheduled for Friday, December 31 at 3:00 pm, admission is free.

Born in Beijing, Liu Xuguang works as director at new media art lab of Beijing Film Academy, he had studied in Japan and taught in Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music.

DEFINITE AND INDEFINITE showcases both abstract ink painting and imaging art. Liu Xuguang’s application of the post-modern expression method is not a mere language problem but a creative way to describe the present existence. It is from the demand of the present reality that the significance of tradition springs up; at the same time, it is also implied that inheriting classic paintings simply and impractically does not make any sense to artistic and cultural development. The conceptional ink painting does not necessarily require a hermeneutical explanation, its objective nature lies hidden behind the surface of the ink and wash. Since the civilization progress is to be defined by the tracks or marks of human impact on nature, Liu Xuguang abstracts these marks and entrusts them with different connotation. The creation of forms is the nature of art, while the thinking of life and humanity is the core of culture. By means of Liu Xuguang's own artistic language, we look forwards to search for the local spiritual source, and the nature of the ink painting.

LIU XU GUANG’S DEFINITE AND INDEFINITE
Curator  Gu Zhen Qing

Liu Xu Guang is an unrestrained artist. Under the present art environment, Liu Xu Guang studied art forms such as expressionism and abstract art, he also had many experiences with medias such as plane, installations and videos. On 1999, his work “Xuan Kong Jie” highlighted his abstract language which was born under the figurative visual trail of photographs. For the logic of the nature of images, their relationships has been constant, refine and modified to create a unique language of abstract expressionism, in early years, Liu Guang Xu studied in Japan, and experienced the Japanese art of calligraphy on the transmission and evolution from the ancient Chinese s, and to point out his understanding of Chinese traditional art and it’s spirit. From the oracle bone inscription, to the box-like Chinese characters, Liu Xu Guang was combing the abstract of prototype symbols which let him experience the harmony between heaven and earth, also the deduction of our heart with the dependence of freedom and order. Start from 1993, Liu Xu Guang kept on writing the word “Bu”(Which carries the meaning of prediction, in ancient Chinese) on his works, and he still insists this writing today, it look as if is a kind of daily home work. However, it is also his challenge and adventure towards the limited border of time and space, because to an artist, fixed ideas and rigid expressions are a kind of slavery and bondage to the infinite potentials of our mind. Even though freedom is limited on his paintings, he still kept on open up the spirit towards the edge of our consciousness, in order to open up and stimulate our imaginations at the same time make known about our creativities. During his creations, not only that he focus on the freedom of expression, but also a quest for the expression of freedom. Basically, the expressions towards freedom give Liu Xu Guang’s art work with value and the meaning for his life, and the freedom of expression is the realm of art that he pursues. The whole process of art creation has become an experience of spiritual freedom to artists or even a grope to the border of freedom. Therefore, towards Liu Xu Guang, abstract art is not just to create a subtle paradigm, it is also a re-examine behavior for arts. With his persistent labor of art, he eventually harvests a kind of daily spiritual freedom and aesthetic consciousness.

Base on his disregard towards the established rules and orders, Liu Xu Guang often face the art experimental methods with an laissez-affair attitude, His video art is often based on a variety of different specific site changes to achieve the maximum visual light and dark possibilities. Therefore, Liu Xu Guang puts the auspicious animals from “Shan Hai Jing” (Chinese mythology) in to the light, to shown us an indefinite and fleeting illusion. The power of his video effects on people’s sub-consciousness and arouse people’s psychological sense, in order to present a border to express freedom, and this border is from other people’s soul. Liu Xu Guang do not intentionally wanted to describe his works, because it might disturb the freedom of reading the meaning of the work, but instead he open the interactive mode, default to accept a wide range of possibilities. The external world and other people's minds, which can be definite, and it also can be indefinite, but Liu Xu Guang will not be disturbed by either of it.
